January 13, 2004 By: Sharon Madison Surge in Disc Golf popularity hits the lakeshoreThe enthusiasm for disc golf in Manitowoc/ Two Rivers is proven by the huge success of Manitowoc's new disc golf course at Silver Creek Park. The most satisfying part of having a new course in a community is the new golfers that experience the sport for the first time. Novice golfers have been flooding Manitowoc's course year round since it opened in October of 2000. The "Manitowalk in the Park" disc golf tournament in 2001 at Silver Creek Park set records for smaller C-Tier PDGA tournaments with over 160 participants and nearly $10,000 in cash and prizes. In Wisconsin, the sport of disc golf took it's foothold in Sheboygan over 25 years ago at Volrath Park. Today Sheboygan continues to sprout some of the best golfers in the world including Barry Schultz, 2002 World Games gold metal winner and Disc Golf World Championship 4th place honoree. Part of the link between Sheboygan and great disc golfers has been Volrath Park's location in the heart of their residential area. Kids can easily ride their bikes to the park and play disc golf all day for free. In 1977, Wisconsin had only 3 disc golf courses while today we have over 40 courses and many more in the works.
