July 31, 2005 By: Sharon Madison Tour Edge Bazooka IronsAs the Tour Edge advertisement says, "The beautiful Bazooka 350 J irons are truly golf’s ultimate weapon combining forgiveness, feel, and power." To deliver on this promise, Tour Edge engineers took casting technology to the limit. Pushing the design envelope, the Bazooka irons are investment cast using Hollow Core Technology, the latest development in club manufacturing. The one-piece, investment cast irons feature a deep-channeled cavity with a hollow core that produces a lower, deeper center of gravity (C.G.){see illustration below}. The hollow core allows the C.G. to be moved further back from the face for forgiveness and stability. According to Jay Hubbard, Director of Marketing for Tour Edge Golf, "Channeled, undercut cavities are becoming very popular because of the incredible forgiveness they offer to players. The concept of creating a lower C.G. and moving it back and away from the face produces a superior club." Setting up beautifully behind the ball, the 350 J irons incorporate the latest in variable face thickness. The center of the face area is remarkably thin while the outer edges are thicker. This enhances the perimeter weighting allowing for a larger, more forgiving sweet spot. Making all of this technology possible is Tour Edge’s proprietary Iso Steel . As soft as forged steel, Iso Steel has a Rockwell hardness rating of HRB90. It feels just like a forged blade. But Iso Steel’s properties allow the undercut cavity to be investment cast to exacting tolerances that are not possible in a forging. Says Hubbard, "We have combined the best of both worlds—maximum forgiveness and pure forged like feel in one iron." Features such as the undercut cavity allow more weight to be added to the sole, making it wider and heavier for an exceptionally low center of gravity. At impact, this additional weight drives through and under the ball, making it easier to hit higher, longer shots. The 350 J irons can be ordered off the rack or custom fit for loft, lie, grip, shaft type, flex, and length in an almost infinite number of combinations. With more than 500 authorized custom fitting centers around the country, a Tour Edge fitting professional can help you dial in a perfect custom set. Also see: discount golf clubs.Author Notes:
