UHI student golfers in historic sporting first

For the first time, a team of students from UHI Millennium Institute (UHI) are entering the Scottish universities golf championships this week in Lossiemouth. This is the first ever occasion UHI has entered a national student sporting competition.

The team, composed of students on the BA golf management delivered through the North Highland College centre in Dornoch, is competing in the five day tournament against students from eleven universities around Scotland including: Aberdeen, Abertay Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews and Stirling. The competition started on Sunday 30 March and finishes on Friday 5 April at the Moray Golf Course in Lossiemouth, and consists of individual competitions and a team event.

Sunday also saw a Scottish Universities select team, which featured UHI team captain Steven Munro, taking part in a match against the Scottish Golfers' Union North District.

Steven said, "there is encouraging discussion among students across the network about how we can support the levels of sporting activity and competition that students in other institutions around the country take for granted. We are all proud to be UHI's first competitive sporting team, and we hope that we can have a very successful week and build on this for the future - not just in golf but in other sports too."

The entry of the UHI team into the competition has been made possible as a result of moves by students from across the UHI network to create the UHI Millennium Institute Students' Association (UHISA) to represent their interests and provide a forum for social and sporting activity. UHISA will formally come into existence for the new academic year.

Rob MacPherson, SUSF (Scottish Universities Sports Federation) Golf Manager said today: "It is fantastic to see a new institution such as UHI MIllennium Institute competing along with established universities, in what is sure to be two fierce competitions. I have heard great things about the UHI golf management degree at Dornoch and hope that students playing of the game matches their enthusiasm and obvious academic talent".

Spectators are welcome to come and watch the event with no admission charge at the Moray Golf Club, Old and New Courses, Lossiemouth.
