January 24, 2004 By: Wayne Guest Hammer, Hansen buy Scales Creek Golf ClubButch Hansen, former Polo Golf and Country Club Vice President and Director of Golf and Glen Hammer, CEO of WaCA, have purchased Scales Creek Golf Club in Homer, Georgia. The club will be renamed Hammer's Glen Golf and Country Club. The club, located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, appears to be one of Georgia's best-kept golfing secrets. It is apparent that nature saved its best for the talents of former top PGA tour player turned architect Mark McCumber. The design of Hammer's Glen is considered by some to be McCumber's masterpiece. The idea was to create a layout that would challenge the low-handicapper while still presenting itself as an enjoyable opportunity for the average player. Proof of pudding lies in the course itself a par 72 which plays to 7,130 yards from the back tees. There are four sets of tees provided on each hole. Each selection offers the golfer another picturesque view of this unique course and a choice of different way to play each hole. "Our ultimate plan is for this golf course to be unmatched in beauty and quality," said Butch Hansen, Director of Golf and Managing Partner. " We feel this location and golf course are as fine as can be found in the state of Georgia. I am excited about the unlimited possibilities this golf course offers." The former Director of Golf at Forsyth County's Polo Golf and Country Club, Hansen is well known in Georgia's golfing community. A former Georgia Hall of Fame "Sportsman of the Year," Hansen has raised millions for special interest groups over the past four decades. He created the Polo Classic, and brought the Georgia State Open and the Ladies Professional Golf Association to Roswell's Brookfield West. The Polo Classic set a national PGA purse record for a two-day Amateur, the second oldest tournament in America, to Forsyth County. He also founded the Georgia State Junior Golf Association. "This golf course will give us the same opportunities," noted Hansen. "This is such beautiful land." Also see: discount golf clubs.Author Notes:
