Stoneridge Golf Course hires superintendent

StoneRidge Golf Course, SunCor Golf’s recently announced 18-hole daily-fee golf club in Prescott Valley, today named Cheryl Aungst its golf course superintendent.

According to the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America (GCSAA), Aungst is Arizona’s second female golf course superintendent of a facility with 18 holes or more and only one of 92 female superintendents in its international membership.

As course superintendent at StoneRidge, she currently is responsible for coordinating with the course architect and construction company on clearing limits, hole shaping and other superintendent managerial duties. Once the course opens in the Summer of 2002, she will be in charge of running a maintenance crew and keeping the golf course in top condition year-round.

“Cheryl has an incredible knowledge of turf grasses,” said Golf Course General Manager Dale Samar. “I worked with her at Sedona Golf Resort where she was the assistant superintendent, and her talent really shone through. I think she will be able to do the same thing at StoneRidge, making it a truly enjoyable golf course to play.”

Aungst has more than 14 years experience in the golf industry overseeing course maintenance and management at such respected courses as Sedona Golf Resort in Sedona, Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale, and Forest Highlands in Flagstaff.

“Over the years, I have learned a strong work ethic and understanding of maintenance practices and the challenges of highly conditioned golf courses, and I feel StoneRidge will be an excellent spot for me to put my experience to work,” Aungst said. “Because of the area’s severe terrain, StoneRidge has been a challenging course to build thus far. About 75 percent of the golf holes contain jurisdictional waterways, which have strictly enforced non-disturb boundaries set to preserve the natural drainage, wildlife and native vegetation. We are very conscious of these boundaries and I think their preservation is creating some spectacular golf holes and adding to the natural beauty of the golf course.”

Originally from Scottsdale, Aungst received her bachelor of science degree in zoology with a minor in chemistry from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. She currently is a member of the GCSAA and its local Cactus and Pine chapter.
