July 10, 2004 By: Dene Bouchard John Daly wins Buick using Penley Golf ShaftsJohn Daly’s spectacular bunker shot on the first playoff hole at last weekend’s Buick Invitational secured his first U.S. PGA Tour win since the 1995 British Open. Daly is now in his fourth year playing Penley Shafts, and the win in San Diego was even more special for Penley since San Diego is also the home of Penley’s worldwide headquarters. Daly used a Penley ETA 75 Shaft in his driver and fairway wood, Penley IMS Iron Shafts in his wedges, and a Penley Mon-Y Putter Shaft in his putter, which all came into play on the final, dramatic playoff hole. On the 571-yard, par-5 18th hole, his 300-plus yard drive was followed by a 270-yard 3-wood into a greenside bunker. The shot of the tournament followed as his sand shot from 100 feet finished six inches from the cup for a tap-in and the win. Everyone at Penley is thrilled for John and proud to be part of a victory that symbolizes his comeback on the PGA Tour, said Brad Stormon, National Marketing Manager, Penley Sports. John is one of the highest profile personalities and one of the nicest players on Tour, and he continues to impress the general public with both his awesome distance and his playing ability. We realize that the golfing public loves him and this tournament proved that he is one of the few players in golf that can draw a crowd and support like Tiger Woods. For the tournament, Daly averaged more than 308 yards per drive with his ETA 75 Shaft, and has now moved into 4th place on the year in the distance category with a 305.7 average, a category he has led 11 times since his PGA Tour Rookie-of-the-Year season in 1990. But it may have been his spectacular sand play last weekend with the IMS Iron Shaft that earned him the championship, as he recorded 10 sand saves in his 12 shots from bunkers. Penley Sports offers a line of shafts for woods under Daly’s name. The Penley John Daly Signature Shaft is a mid-weighted shaft offered in most flexes to fit most swing speeds. In addition, the Penley PGA Tour Van, which visits each tournament to care to players’ equipment needs and the only such van from a graphite shaft manufacturer, features a large image of John and the graphics of the John Daly Signature Shaft.
