  • The First Tee junior golf program - announces Kick Off
The Aurora Chapter of The First Tee announces the kick-off of their junior golf program. The First Tee is a nationwide initiative of the World Golf Foundation, dedicated to making the game of golf accessible to youth of all economical and ethnic backgrounds, who otherwise might not have an opportunity to play. The structure of the program concentrates on instilling our youth with such essential values as honesty, integrity, a solid work ethic, and good sportsmanship.

The National First Tee serves as a catalyst for the formation of local chapters, each of which is an independent 501(c) (3) corporation. The City of Aurora and the Fox Valley Park District joined efforts to form the local chapter and to incorporate the existing youth program, which was developed in 1998 and has since introduced more than 3,000 area youth to the game of golf.

The initial program expanded from summer courses of instruction, to part of the curriculum at local public and parochial schools. As a member of The First Tee, the local youth golf program will have the opportunity to continue to grow and further expand. Currently Fox Bend, Fox Valley, Orchard Valley, Phillips Park,Valley Green, and Cantigny golf courses provide First Tee participants access to their courses.

The Aurora Chapter will receive support from the National First Tee through such avenues as grants and free golf equipment, as well as resources for discounted course maintenance equipment. The daily operating costs of the program will be a private-public collaboration. The support of the golf course owners, the golf professionals, the school district personnel, the City of Aurora, the Fox Valley Park District and the local business leaders has been outstanding and resulted in the establishment of The First Tee Youth Golf Program for the City of Aurora and the Fox Valley Area.

The local chapter's goal is to provide the facilities and the programs that will enable kids from every walk of life to partake of a game that teaches values for life and which can be played for a lifetime. The program is coordinated by Lowell Turley, who is assisted by Cal Tyson and Wilbur Walters, all of who serve as the lead instructors. The Board of Directors consists of: Juventino Cano, Cano Containers; Leon McNair, Fox Bend Golf Course; Bob Vaughan, Fox Valley Park District; Cheryl Vonhoff, City Clerk's Office; Bob Brent, Retired Police Chief; Lowell Turley, Youth Activities; and Ron Ford, Parks & Recreation. The First Tee Board of Directors has currently been working to secure donations and sponsorships and is looking for interested individuals to join at the committee level.

The fundraising effort was kicked-off when Nadler Golf Car Sales, Inc. committed to donating $25,000 annually for the next five years. The Aurora-based business was started by Bill & Bea Nadler in 1963. Their children Dave Nadler, Karen Nadler-Baumgartner and Keith Nadler have run the company since their parents' retirement. The Nadler family felt this was an avenue where they could provide area children an opportunity to learn and play the game of golf, while also instilling such positive aspects as self-esteem and self-discipline in today's youth. Their generous donation was in an effort to give back to the community and to the game of golf, which has been the reason behind the success of their family-operated business.

In addition, donations have also been received from Juventino Cano of Cano Container Corporation, 7-Eleven and the Aurora-Naperville Rotary. Though the fundraising effort requires the support of the entire community, so please consider making a donation to The First Tee - Aurora Chapter. Your assistance at any level will be greatly appreciated and will lend support to a positive youth program.

Volunteer and mentor opportunities are also available, thanks in part to Big Brother Big Sisters, who is offering new volunteer options that combine the love of golf with a genuine interest in children. Members of all ages are encouraged to make either a one-to-one commitment to a child or become part of an adult team that works with youth participants, ages 8 through 15, at the summer golf clinics. To learn more about becoming a Golf Mentor contact Kelly Classen, Case Manager, Big Brother Big Sisters at (630) 844-9090, extension 7.

The summer clinics, which began June 18, are an extension of the school program. The participants receive instruction from a professional golf staff in a classroom setting and on the course, which includes Full Swing Putting: posture, grip, alignment, motion and balance; Full Swing Chipping: ball flight laws, practice drills and practice games; Full Swing Pitching: tee shots, iron play and short game. Rules, etiquette and safety are taught and emphasized in every aspect of the game, however, providing a positive and entertaining atmosphere and experience for the youth is essential.

Aurora's First Tee facility is located at the Phillips Park Golf Course. The newly reconstructed course opened on July 14 and features a 3-hole junior course and a driving range. The Dedication Ceremony and Open House, which also served as the official kick-off of The First Tee - Aurora Chapter, was held on Tuesday, July 10, with representatives in attendance from The National First Tee. This gave guests an opportunity to view the new amenities, which include offices for the local chapter in the lower level of the new clubhouse.

  • Loony klink to Links Gear Golf Equipment just a chip shot away with cartoony and quirky 3Balls.com
    Loony Link to Links Gear
3Balls.com is the latest eye-catching website recently developed by EMagine of Canton, MA. EMagine's team won the honor of developing the enticing, informative and humorous web presence for Joe & Leigh's Discount Golf Pro Shop of South Easton, MA. Via the eBay link to 3balls.com, the company has become the 2nd largest reseller of golf equipment on eBay.

According to Joe Ricci and PGA Golf Professional Leigh Bader, owners of Joe & Leigh's Discount Golf Pro Shop, the 3Balls.com namesake is attributed not only to the three large globe fixtures generally found in the storefronts of Pawn Shops, there are also (in golf-speak) three balls in a sleeve.

    "GO-TO" PROS
Because of Joe and Leigh's unique ambition to "make a friend, not a sale" in addition to Leigh being known as one of the "72 Most Powerful People in Golf" according to Golf Pro Magazine, the website had to speak for itself in a most affable yet professional manner. Bearing that in mind, the EMagine team strived to develop an easygoing, humorous site that unfolded as a satirical cartoon story with pictorials accessing ten pages and interfaced with Joe and Leigh's auction and eBay.

EMagine's Creative Director Ed Smith, the talented editorial cartoonists who also freelances for "Editorial Humor", the largest editorial humor publication in the world, helped create the concept and design for this cartoony and loony website that completely differentiates 3balls.com from the pack. Smith is a South Shore loyalist who currently resides in Marshfield after formative years in Holbrook and Braintree.

"Our mission was to design a site geared for an audience of both pro and novice golfers, augmenting Joe and Leigh's well-known and well-trafficked Discount Golf Pro Shop. 3Balls.com is adventuresome, which is not unlike the shop itself, telling its own story in a cohesive manner that ensures ease for all visitors," said Bill Gadless, president of Emagine, a Randolph resident and Brockton native. "Joe and Leigh's is one of a kind. We needed to mirror the golf "toy store" feeling in the site itself. Visitors see the site as informative and entertaining, while we know that the site effectively reinforces Joe and Leigh's brand identity and culture in a thoroughly unique manner designed for the long-term."

    COOL CARICATURE
After incorporating the main theme complete with fictional and real staff caricature characters, the site is enhanced with 3Balls.com and Joe & Leigh's Discount Golf Pro Shop history and golf stories that "those that were there" can tell. Site visitors can meet the staff of Joe and Leigh's Discount Pro Shop at the "Line-up", and then capture a laugh at the "Giggle" section. To keep the site fresh, the "Giggles" cartoon changes monthly.

    E-BIZ TOOLS FOR TRAFFIC
In broadening the store's already expansive reach, 3Balls.com is interfaced with Joe and Leigh's discount golf equipment auction site on eBay. Reinforcing Joe and Leigh's belief in offering only quality merchandise, 3Balls.com offers complete sections outlining equipment and component grading and condition descriptions with checklists.

    BRANDED
"Our goal was to present a lighthearted and entertaining way to communicate with golf enthusiasts. We intended to build both a business to business and business to consumer site. Now, it has become a major method of dispensing used products around the country. We found most golf sites boilerplate in design. Our hopefully unique, playful site has generated an overwhelmingly positive response and people enjoy the characters and off-beat humor," noted Leigh Bader, co-founder of Joe and Leigh's Discount Golf Pro Shop as well as one of the "72 Most Powerful People in Golf" according to Golf Pro Magazine. Leigh has also been honored as the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of America's "National Merchandiser of the Year for Public Golf Courses" in 1995.

  • High hopes for new Top-Flite®Tour™Ball in 2003
TOP-FLITE, the most widely played golf ball brand in North America and known for offering great products at superior value, has positioned the TOP-FLITE TOUR for 2003, as its first value-priced, three-piece, multi-layer golf ball. Senior PGA Tour Professional, Lee Trevino, who was instrumental in the testing and development of the ball, debuted the TOP-FLITE TOUR golf ball at last year's Battle at Big Horn, televised on ABC.

"Without question, the new TOP-FLITE TOUR golf ball is the best a twenty-dollar bill can buy," said golf great Lee Trevino. "It's providing me with great distance and excellent control. There is no other ball out here like it at this price - just wait and see."

"TOP-FLITE has always made premium performing golf balls that are affordable and of great value to the consumer," stated Mike McAuliffe, director of Top-Flite category for Spalding. "We changed the world with TOP-FLITE (distance), and then again with TOP-FLITE® XL2000® (long and soft), and now we're breaking new ground with the multi-layer TOP-FLITE TOUR."

The TOP-FLITE TOUR's patented multi-layer three-piece construction consists of a soft, sheer resistant Spintack™ cover for shot-stopping control, a 66 compression, high molecular weight energy core for superior Top-Flite distance, a proprietary high-coverage dimple design to increase aerodynamic efficiency for long ball flight, and a firm, ionomer mantle layer for regulation of spin and distance.

TOP-FLITE TOUR is for any golfer who would play a tour product and will compete for Titleist's NXT and HVC, Callaway's CB1, Maxfli's Noodle, and Precept's MC Lady users.

"There is no doubt that this is the best performing ball within the $20 price point ball segment," added McAuliffe. "For more than three months, we focused on developing and testing a ball that provides Top-Flite distance and tour performance. The multi-layer TOP-FLITE TOUR is that ball, and given that 95% of all tour balls are multi-layer, we realized consumers want comparable technology at an affordable price."

Just how significant is a multi-layer golf ball to consumers? In the July 2002 Golf Digest "Special Report: The Best Buy In Golf?," Frank Thomas, Golf Digest's Chief Technical Advisor, noted: "Today's premium balls are typically multi-layer in construction . . . This is the combination that the very best golfers want . . . All golfers can benefit from using this type of construction . . ."

The TOP-FLITE® XL 3000® golf ball line, which includes the SUPER LONG, SUPER STRAIGHT, SUPER FEEL, and SUPER SPIN, will continue to be sold. With the TOP-FLITE TOUR golf ball, players will now benefit from a complete ball offering -- traditional Top-Flite distance that competes on tour and helps take your shot from the tee to tap in.
