- REserve program offers customers lower prices, quality assurance
The next best thing to a new Club Car is a previously owned Club Car that still carries not only the company’s name, but also its reputation for quality and commitment to service. Club Car enters the pre-owned golf car market this year with its REserve vehicle program, which will take Club Car golf cars coming off lease, send them through a rigorous refurbishing process and sell or lease them at substantially less than new fleet cars. “There is a significant amount of demand in the market today for a lower-priced golf car that still offers the assurance of the Club Car brand,” said Brian Crawford, vice president of sales, Aftermarket. “This program helps us address that market with a consistently high-quality product offering that gives our customers great value.” The vehicles coming into the program this year will be primarily pre-owned electric golf cars. Vehicles will either go to Club Car’s main plant here or to its custom manufacturing facility at Indio, Calif., to enter an extensive refurbishing process. The process includes a thorough mechanical inspection of the chassis, suspension, steering, electrical and brake systems to make sure the vehicle is performing to original factory specifications. The body (front and rear), bumpers, scuff guards, bag well protector and access panel will be replaced. In addition, seats, tires, canopy top, batteries and battery chargers will be tested to make sure they are in good condition and free from damage or defects. Cars purchased through the REserve program will be supported by a limited factory warranty. Author: Wayne Guest - Date: January 24, 2004

Fifty years ago, Ben Hogan completed one of golf’s greatest feats when he became the first professional to win three majors in the same season: the 1953 Masters, the U.S. Open and the British Open. The exhibit will feature a generous amount of photographs and memorabilia from 1953, when he won five of the six four-round tournaments he entered that year-the U.S. Open, the Masters and the British Open, plus the Colonial and the Pan-American. Made possible with the donation of memorabilia from Ben Hogan Golf, Shady Oaks Country Club and Colonial Country Club as well as author Martin Davis, the exhibit will feature equipment, photographs and mementos from 1953 when Mr. Hogan won five of the six four-round tournaments he entered that year among its historical chronicles. Other career moments will be featured in the exhibit, including his near-death car accident and the formation of his golf equipment company, The Ben Hogan Company. “We’re pleased to join the World Golf Hall of Fame to bring Mr. Hogan’s achievements to life for all the world to enjoy and appreciate,” said Lou Tursi, executive vice president of sales, marketing and customer service for Spalding Sports Worldwide, owner of Ben Hogan golf. “He is truly among sports greatest legends, so golf fans, historians, and sports fans alike will enjoy this wonderful exhibit.” For the exhibit, Ben Hogan Golf has donated numerous items including one of two original sets of golf clubs made in 1954 by the Ben Hogan Company in its original box, a distinctive cap that was Mr. Hogan’s trademark, copies of photos not released to the public, and a letter Mr. Hogan wrote and distributed to club pros in October of 1953 introducing his plans for his golf company. In addition, the company donated a driver and 4 wood that was among the last Mr. Hogan used and his scorecard from the 1953 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Other artifacts will include several of Mr. Hogan’s putters, including prototypes he developed; a pair of his shoes showing extra spikes; and a scorecard from Shady Oaks when he beat his age for the first time, shooting 64 at age 65. The memorabilia on display will also include Mr. Hogan’s locker containing personal items from Shady Oaks Country Club, where he was a member. “Mr. Hogan’s achievements and contributions to the game are so monumental and should never to be forgotten,” said Sharon Rea, Mr. Hogan’s longtime administrative assistant, who was instrumental in organizing the initiative with the World Golf Hall of Fame. “Having memorabilia, personal photographs and keepsakes from his championship 1953 season at such a heralded museum is the best tribute we could pay to Mr. Hogan.” Martin Davis, author of the book, “Ben Hogan: The Man Behind the Mystique,” has also contributed to the exhibit which will feature several photographs that are extremely rare and have been published only in his book. They include photos of the 1953 British Open and the New York City ticker tape parade that came from Hogan’s personal collection. “It is our pleasure to celebrate the golden anniversary of Ben Hogan’s outstanding year, 1953, and his entire career,” said Jack Peter, the Hall of Fame’s Chief Operating Officer. - Surge in Disc Golf popularity hits the lakeshore
The enthusiasm for disc golf in Manitowoc/ Two Rivers is proven by the huge success of Manitowoc's new disc golf course at Silver Creek Park. The most satisfying part of having a new course in a community is the new golfers that experience the sport for the first time. Novice golfers have been flooding Manitowoc's course year round since it opened in October of 2000. The "Manitowalk in the Park" disc golf tournament in 2001 at Silver Creek Park set records for smaller C-Tier PDGA tournaments with over 160 participants and nearly $10,000 in cash and prizes. In Wisconsin, the sport of disc golf took it's foothold in Sheboygan over 25 years ago at Volrath Park. Today Sheboygan continues to sprout some of the best golfers in the world including Barry Schultz, 2002 World Games gold metal winner and Disc Golf World Championship 4th place honoree. Part of the link between Sheboygan and great disc golfers has been Volrath Park's location in the heart of their residential area. Kids can easily ride their bikes to the park and play disc golf all day for free. In 1977, Wisconsin had only 3 disc golf courses while today we have over 40 courses and many more in the works. - The arrival of the Smart Golf Course: management of golf course security-gated communities will never be the same
What do aerial photography, mapping, and modern Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technologies have in common? To answer that question fully we have to look to the beginning of one of golf course management's most vital tools - the map. The dusty, faded course map attached to your office wall, vaguely reminiscent of a yellowing museum display has faithfully provided a wealth of information to the golf course planner. That essential information is now being combined with technologies from the earlier mentioned disciplines and is propelling course and community management capabilities into the 21st century. Golf was invented years ago in Scotland and required only the most basic equipment. A gnarly stick was the first version of a club. Golf equipment today is far more complex. You can expect to purchase fairway woods, irons, putters, wedges and drivers just to satisfy your club needs.
